Tip of the Week # 7

Tyre sizing

Road bikes measurements show diameter then width i.e. 700c x 23 is common for high speed racing tires, meaning the tire is 700 mm in diameter 23 mm wide.

For the winter I use a 700c x 25mm, the extra width leaves the ride a little more comfortable and generally is more reliable.  In some of the spring classics the pros use 28mm wide tyres on the back to avoid punctures across the cobbles of Belgium/France.  Be careful when purchasing wider tyres as some bikes may not have the clearances to fit an oversized tyre.  Your generally ok with 25mm tyres.

Tube sizes

To get the right tube for the right tyre you need to look at the box.  If you have a 25mm tyre you need 700 x 18/25C.  This means the tube will fit any standard race wheel with a tyre width of between 18 and 25mm.  So if it has 700 x 18/23C on the box means it will not be suitable for your 25mm wide tyre.
